Wollongong Wildcats

The South Coasts only American formed team with a Nationally accrediated coach.

The Wildcats were formed in late 2000, at the University of Wollongong, by students Kimberly Finlay, Alison Slater and Kelly Galagher. However, due to increased interest from non-univeristy students the Wollongong Wildcats soon formed its own entity.

Trained by American Cheerleader Meredith Steer and Alison Slater and Managed by Kimberly Finlay, the Wollongong Wildcats were soon ready to compete in National and International Competitions.

Upon Ms Steer's return to the U.S.A. the squad continued to train under Ms Alison Slater. Ms Slater has been cheerleading for over 12years and started as a Wollongong Wolves and Illawarra Hawks cheerleader. Ms Slater has combined the current style of perfomance with the American Cheer and traveled to Queensland in 2003 to complete accreditation. The National Level Accreditation is needed to teach competition level Cheerleading In Australia.

Over the past 5years the Wollongong Wildcats have competed in State, National and International level competitions placing 2nd and 3rd in the International Down Under Bowl in 2003.

The Wollongong Wildcats have also performed at venues such as the Rugby World Cup (France Vs USA), Viva La Gong for three consecutive years, Sydney's Fox Studios for the "Get Active" display, Big Brother evictee parties in 2004, the Gosford Motor-Cross, and at several local venues including performances for the Wollongong Wolves at the WIN Entertainment Centre and various other sporting events throughout the Illawarra.

The Wollongong Wildcats offer two distinct types of classes and performances.

Classes are held for students under 18 years of age:

  1. Cheerleading: beginner level, through to advanced
  2. Stunts Team: beginner stunt team, through to audition level squad

Students over 18 years of age:

  1. Cheerleading: Dance experience recommended.
  2. Stunts Team:  Advanced level skills, experience not needed (gymnastics and or dance skills encouraged).
